Academy Award® winning actor Sean Penn has joined Beau Willimon’s upcoming Hulu original drama series The First, the acclaimed actor’s first foray into television. Set in the near future, The First follows the first human mission to Mars exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonisation. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth.

Lola were approached to create a supernova and a fly-through of an expanding nebula after the production had seen our work (from several years ago) on the Discovery series How the Universe Works. We combined specially shot high-speed studio FX plates with 4K CG clouds, starfields and shockwaves. Tim Zaccheo provided the 3D and Joe Cork had the unenviable task of combining more than 40 layers of 4K footage in Nuke to create the 30 second sequence.
